Proximity searches

Last published : Oct 28, 2026
A proximity search finds two words that occur within a specified distance of each other. To perform a proximity search, enclose the two words in double quotation marks, follow them with a tilde (~), and then enter a numeric value.
For example:
"cloud computing"~5
The numeric value specifies the maximum number of words that can occur between the two words in the search.
Conditions for using proximity searches:
Note the following when using proximity searches:
  • The returned results are not highlighted.
  • The proximity word count cannot exceed 49 words.
  • Wildcard characters cannot be used in a proximity search.
  • Proximity search results can contain stop words, but stop words are excluded from the proximity word count.
Understanding proximity searches helps you find related terms that occur near each other even when other words appear between them.
